ISAC - DIVE SITE / DIVE WEEKEND WISH LIST

-at April 2003

List of sites suggested by the Club members present on Friday 1st March 2002.  Loads of good suggestions, in fact more suggestions than available weekends, so this might last us a few years!  If we aim for one weekend every 3-4 weeks fitting in around existing trips and pre-organised SDC’s that we are hosting that should do us.  If you fancy having a shot at organising a weekend, please stick your name down along with suggested dates, this will help me to put a programme together.  Don’t worry if you are not an Advanced diver, you can still organise the logistics of a weekend, and we will probably be able to hook you up with an Advanced diver who is able to marshal the diving.  Please volunteer, it saves me having to twist peoples arms!  Cheers Jim

Andy 27th/28th July  2002

Portskerra

Underwater Arch, shore diving Suggested as a Sunday dive, quite a long haul for a day but radically different from Loch’s Duich and Carron, could be done any time the weather is calm if Bear keep the roads clear!

Eilean Nan Ron

Very Scenic Shallow diving and remoteness of area.  Two blown out weekends in 2000 Quality of Diving available largely dependent on there being no NW Swell.  Accommodation in Skerray or Talmine.  Camping on Island may be a possible.

Colin 9th –11th August 2002Camping Talmine

Loch Laxford

Scenic Diving, walls and reefs, not somewhere we have been as a club for a long time Potential for finding sheltered corners in the loch but mouth exposed to swell, another area with potential for late summer but accommodation camping so could be midgey

Camping Scourie, launching Fanagmore

Loch Eriboll

Stunning underwater scenery towards Whiten head when weather permits, shallow diving with good chance to see seals underwater. Caravan accommodation available at Laid. Other possibilities may be available

3 Days on St Kilda Trip 26th May – 7th June 2002

Loch Aline / Sound of Mull

Perhaps greatest concentration of wrecks in UK outside of Scapa Flow and somewhere different! Could go anytime if Hardboat trip organised, but is feasable in RIBs, this would be more weather dependent.  Popular area for divers so has potential for sites to get crowded

Watternish, Isle of Skye,

Wreck diving and remoteness of area, Good accomodation and fills at dive centre at  Stein Long haul with RIB but several slipways in this general area.  Possible for Autumn, although may be reliant on a sheltered spell

Donald MacNeill 19th- 21st April 2003  - Spring Tides!!!!

Oban and Garvellachs

Scenic hardboat diving with challenging reef and drift diving at the Garvellachs MV Porpoise trip postponed from last year still to be re-organised.  Jim McD and Steph

Loch Bracadale

Potential for mixed activity weekend, eg day 1 on Cuillins day 2 diving Hostel Accomodation and Launching at Portnalong but other launching sites available in the loch

Scott 4th –6th October Harboat diving from Struan Jetty with Hebridean Diving Services

Ullapool - Isle Martin

Great wall diving on Isle Martin on Scoraig and Coigach Mainland.  Wreck of Fairweather. Most recently dived from the Goldseeker but no reason why we cant do these sites with RIBs

April 7th Janet, impromptu dive on Innesjurra in place of cancelled North Coast Weekend

Reiff - Coigach

Another suggested mixed activity weekend combining climbing on Seacliffs at Reiff and diving Launching at Old Dornie for the Summer Isles, Very basic camp site at Reiff (Toilets but no Showers)

Donald x2 30th Aug – 1st Sept. 2002  (Poor Weather)

Moray / Buchan Coast

More sites along this coast than Capel Rock, Several sites suggested including, Lossie Skerries, Cullican Bay, the wreck of the Fraym.  Potential to be explored during the midge season

Robin Capel Rock 31st March and 30th June 2002

Canna and Small Isles

Cracking wall diving and the achievement of getting there! Possible camping on Canna.

Achmelvich

Scenic diving, Ondine Rocks, Loch Roe and at Soya Island. Nice campsite with good facilities and a nice spot for a beach BBQ. Beach launch at Achmelvich using 4WD.  Potential for family weekend including Snorkeling

Steven Colligan Midsummer WE 2002 (beach launch not brilliant even with a 4x4) weather rubbish again

Lewis - Carlaway

Back to Donalds Roots, possible interesting diving on West Coast of Lewis and on East coast south of Stornoway Long weekend or week trip, maybe a bit much for this year perhaps

St Kilda Trip  - Back up sites, well worth another visit (2002)

North East Caithness

Scenic sea cave diving at Duncansby Head, Drift Dives at Dunnet Head, Pentland Skerries, Swona, Stroma, South Scapa Flow by RIB, Wick. - long list not been here for a while another possible for July August.

Scalpay

Dive Charter Business on Island little else known so not much help I am afraid.

Loch Sunart

Wall and reef diving towards the mouth of the Loch, different underwater life compared to what we normally see.  Potential to ‘Bag’ Point of Ardnamurchan.  Good accommodation available all year but cheaper off season.

Sam Crymble 1st/2nd March 2003

Glenuig and Area

Scenic Diving in Sound of Arisaig, including mearl beds and Glacial Shoals, in good weather potential to get out to spectacular wall at Bo Fascadale.  Accommodation at Glenuig Inn, launching at narrow slipway nearby.

Islay

Dive Charter Business, with very organised set up and fast boat! Apparently! Another long haul, suitable for a long weekend.  Distance involved may make charter boat a more economical prospect than towing RIBs

Loch Nevis / Knoydart

Remote and an achievement getting there, spectacular scenary and loads of scallops Long weekend required for this really, logistics could be problematic.  Brilliant Pub in Inverie, most remote in (mainland) Britain! Possibility later in 2003 – interest in Seasearch Surveys

Loch Hourn

Unspoilt and unpopulated Inner Loch, sense of adventure with nice wall and shoal diving. One of the clubs favourite haunts with a midsummer weekend there most years.

Colin Wishart 19th April 2002 Club Sunday Dive (private Boats)  Frank and Phil – numerous 2002/03

Raasay

Some good diving to be had in close proximity to the outdoor centre. Usually get a deal on accomodation when outside the main season but so often there in less than ideal weather so logistics can be tricky.

Neil MacInnes 2nd-5th May 2003

Sheildaig

Good drift dive through Torridon Narrows and other good dives to be had. Within easy reach for a Sunday boat dive in the Slipway very narrow. Free camping in village but not very flat and very midgy.

Kylesku

Very good drift dive and walls towards the outer loch, inner loch are a bit murky. Excellent chalet accommodation in Kylesku. May be nice to dive in the narrows at slack.  Neap tide weekend ideal

Colin Wishart 5th/6th April 2003.
